January 9th, 2017 City Council Decision on Bikeshare
On the 9th of January, bikeshare got a big boost towards possibility when Sidra Anis and April Horvath presented our Bikeshare Feasibility Study to City Council. The outcome of this second council presentation was the decision passed unanimously to create a Bikeshare Steering Committee. A sub-committee of the Windsor Bicycling Advisory Committee, it will likely be tasked with creating the policies that govern bikeshare, making decisions on business structure and producing or commissioning a business plan.
The steering committee is a vital step towards implementation. Though our projected launch date is 2021, each process takes time and must have community and city buy-in. However, this decision moves us towards the goal of an integrated transportation system that is equitable and accessible. It is heartening to know that the City of Windsor sees the importance of bikeshare as it solves the last mile problem, provides an active transportation option and removes many barriers to cycling such as storage, maintenance and purchase of cycling equipment. Additionally, as the cycling infrastructure projects identified as vital to bikeshare are completed, the safety of all cyclists in the city will improve.
